-          Getting Started and General Club Information

What is the Smokey Valley Muzzle Loaders club all about?   

We are a community-focused club dedicated to promoting the historic and enjoyable pastime of traditional muzzle-loading shooting. We welcome shooters of all ages and skill levels.

How often does the club meet?

We typically hold one match per month on the fourth Sunday. You can find our complete schedule, including any exceptions, on the Calendar page.

Where are the club matches held?

All Smokey Valley Muzzleloaders matches are held at Burro Canyon Shooting Park in 22100 E Fork Rd, Azusa, CA 91702 (626) 910-1344. Here is a Google Maps link to Burro Canyon Shooting Park.

How much does it cost to participate in a match?

             The cost for participation is $27 per match (cost is $2 for Burro Canyon Range members). This fee helps cover range fees, target costs, and club operations.

What is the typical start time and duration of a match?

             Matches usually start at 9:00 AM. Participants should arrive 45 minutes early for registration and to setup your equipment. Matches typically conclude by 2:00 PM.

Do I have to be a member to shoot?

             No. Visitors are welcome to attend as a non-member.


-          Equipment and General Match Overview (Official Rules)

What types of firearms are allowed in competition?

             We are a traditional club. All competitive matches are shot exclusively with TRADITIONAL MUZZLE LOADING RIFLES and PISTOLS.  Traditional muzzle loading pistols are allowed compete but you will be competing against rifle shooters.

What type of ammunition and powder is required?

             We strictly adhere to traditional standards: Shooters must use BLACK POWDER or approved substitutes and ROUND BALL ONLY. We do not allow modern conical bullets, sabots, or smokeless powder in our matches.

How many shots are fired during a typical match?

             A typical match course of fire is 25 shots plus sighters, 5 per target, usually spread across 5 targets or stages.

What kind of targets do you shoot?

             Our primary target is the classic bullseye. We also feature "fun stages" with novelty targets like paper plates or other non-standard targets to keep things entertaining.

Are there safety rules I should know before attending?

             Yes. Safety is our top priority. All participants must follow the strict rules of Burro Canyon Shooting Park and the Smokey Valley Muzzleloaders club Official Rules.

 

-          Membership and Contact

How do I join the Smokey Valley Muzzle Loaders club?

             Prospective members must attend 2 (two) shooting events before their name can be placed before the membership for acceptance. An acceptance vote of 2/3 (two-thirds) of the members is required.

Annual dues will be $20.00 per family.
